This summer, things are cooling down at Japan’s most unexpected museum. From July 10 to September 8, the Unko Museum will host its limited-time seasonal event, the “Chilly!! Unko Summer Festival 2025”, at its locations in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka (Fukuoka starts July 19).

Hosted by Tanoshii Museum Inc., the event invites visitors into a frozen poop-themed wonderland where the mythical “Unko Volcano” lies encased in ice. Guests are encouraged to “melt the ice” with their collective energy in this interactive, playful twist on summer fun.

What Is “Unko” and the Unko Museum?

In Japanese, “unko” (うんこ) is a lighthearted, informal word for poop. It's often heard in playful settings, especially among children, and carries a tone more silly than vulgar.

The Unko Museum takes this humorous nuance and runs with it - creating a colourful, interactive space where visitors can explore the theme of poop in unexpected and entertaining ways. Rather than provoking with shock, the museum uses laughter and creativity to reframe what’s usually a taboo subject, coining its unique style of experience as “Un-tertainment”.

Since opening in 2019, the museum has drawn over 2 million visitors to its permanent and temporary locations across Japan. The Unko Museum’s main venues continue to introduce fresh exhibits and seasonal events, offering a surprising blend of humour, design, and cultural curiosity - all centred around the most unlikely of topics.
