22 Aug 2026Kanagawa · KantoFew things capture a Japanese summer like a hanabi taikai, a fireworks festival. From massive riverside displays over Tokyo and Osaka to intimate local shows, thousands of shells light up the sky while crowds watch in yukata with street food in hand.
Fireworks festivals (hanabi taikai) run mainly from late July through August, the heart of the Japanese summer, with a few in spring and autumn. The biggest displays fall on summer weekends.
Among the most famous are the Sumida River Fireworks in Tokyo, the Naniwa Yodogawa Fireworks in Osaka, and the Nagaoka Fireworks in Niigata, each drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators.
Most displays are free to watch from public areas, though they get very crowded. Many festivals also sell reserved paid seating with the best views, worth booking ahead for the largest events.
