Cosplay was named in Japan, and nowhere else is the hobby taken quite as seriously. Fans transform into their favorite anime, manga and game characters at dedicated events, rented photo studios and entire street festivals, backed by shopping districts full of costumes, wigs and props.

Where can I see cosplay in Japan?

The biggest single stage is the World Cosplay Summit, held in Nagoya every summer. In Tokyo, the cosplay area at Comiket draws thousands of performers, and Ikebukuro hosts regular street events such as Acosta and the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Fest. Osaka's Nipponbashi Street Festa turns the Den Den Town district into a giant cosplay parade.

Can tourists cosplay in Japan?

Yes, and many events sell participant tickets to visitors. The main rule is that you change into costume at the venue, not on the street or the train, so use the changing rooms events provide. Rental photo studios are another easy option: you book a themed set by the hour and shoot in costume with friends.

Where do I buy cosplay costumes in Japan?

Ikebukuro and Akihabara in Tokyo are the main shopping hubs, with specialist stores like ACOS selling licensed costumes, wigs and props. Secondhand shops carry cheaper pre-owned outfits, and Nipponbashi in Osaka has a similar cluster of stores.
