Credits

Hey Japan! is built on open data and open tools. This page credits the sources we rely on and the licenses they are published under.

Japanese public data

This website uses the National Land Numerical Information published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT). The data has been processed for use on this site; the original datasets are available at nlftp.mlit.go.jp.

  • Railway lines and stations: 国土数値情報 (鉄道データ, N02), MLIT. Station readings, codes and line colours are supplemented with data from ekidata.jp.

  • Bus stops: 国土数値情報 (バス停留所, P11), MLIT.

  • Administrative boundaries: 国土数値情報 (行政区域, N03), MLIT, used to assign places and stops to their municipalities.

  • Geocoding: address coordinates are resolved with the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (国土地理院) address search API.

Maps

Our railway and area maps are drawn by Hey Japan! from the data above. Railway lines, stations and administrative boundaries come from MLIT's National Land Numerical Information, published under CC BY 4.0; we simplify, combine and restyle them, so a map is our work and not MLIT's. The short credit on each map points here.

  • Water, rivers and roads on local area maps: © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.

  • Airport locations: OurAirports, public domain.

  • Station names in English and Shinkansen stations: Wikidata, CC0.

Live data

  • Weather and sun times: Open-Meteo, licensed CC BY 4.0.

  • Typhoons, weather warnings, cherry blossom and autumn leaf dates: Japan Meteorological Agency (気象庁), used under the Public Data License, version 1.0 (公共データ利用規約 第1.0版). We select, translate and summarise the data: the wording and maps on this site are made by Hey Japan! based on JMA's data, not published by JMA.

  • Exchange rates: European Central Bank reference rates, served by frankfurter.dev.

Photographs are our own or used with permission. Where a photo requires an individual credit, it appears alongside the image.
