Credits

Hey Japan! is built on open data and open tools. This page credits the sources we rely on and the licenses they are published under.

Japanese public data

This website uses the National Land Numerical Information published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan (MLIT). The data has been processed for use on this site; the original datasets are available at nlftp.mlit.go.jp.

  • Railway lines and stations: 国土数値情報 (鉄道データ, N02), MLIT. Station readings, codes and line colours are supplemented with data from ekidata.jp.

  • Bus stops: 国土数値情報 (バス停留所, P11), MLIT.

  • Administrative boundaries: 国土数値情報 (行政区域, N03), MLIT, used to assign places and stops to their municipalities.

  • Geocoding: address coordinates are resolved with the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (国土地理院) address search API.

Live data

  • Weather and sun times: Open-Meteo, licensed CC BY 4.0.

  • Exchange rates: European Central Bank reference rates, served by frankfurter.dev.

Design

  • Icons: Lucide, ISC license.

  • Typeface: M PLUS 1 by Coji Morishita, SIL Open Font License.
