Godzilla Science Exhibition: Confronting Threats Through Science
ゴジラサイエンス展 ~脅威に科学で立ち向かう~
A science exhibition frames monster-movie weapons and disasters through the lens of real-world hazard prevention, asking how science addresses the threats symbolized by Godzilla.

The Science Museum in Chiyoda will host the “Godzilla Science Exhibition: Confronting Threats Through Science” from January 15 to January 27, 2026. Organised by the Japan Science Foundation, the exhibition combines entertainment and science education, inviting visitors to explore how scientific understanding can address the challenges symbolised by Godzilla.
First appearing in 1954, Godzilla has long reflected the scientific and social anxieties of each era — from nuclear energy and environmental destruction to pandemics and natural disasters. This exhibition takes the question “What if Godzilla appeared today?” as a starting point for learning about disaster prevention, risk reduction, and the role of science in ensuring a safer and more sustainable future.
Exhibition Highlights
Learning Science Through Godzilla The exhibition examines how the Godzilla films have depicted advances in science and technology over time, while also highlighting the social messages behind them. Visitors can explore how fiction helps shape scientific literacy and our relationship with nature.
Disaster Science and Anti-Godzilla Technologies Weapons and machines that appear in the films, such as Mechagodzilla and Super X, are compared with real-world disaster response robots and technologies. The displays introduce how science helps society respond to, predict, and recover from natural disasters involving water, land, and air.
Giant Monsters and Future Science This section considers how rapid scientific and technological development can create both benefits and unintended consequences. Through the symbolism of giant monsters, the exhibition invites reflection on humanity’s relationship with nature and the role of science in building a safer future.
Special Programs
Experts from various fields will give talks on scientific technologies that help humans confront the forces of nature.
Godzilla Science Quiz Rally
Visitors can participate in a science-themed quiz rally and receive a commemorative certificate with their photo, available to early participants.
The exhibition emphasises Godzilla’s role as a “mirror of its time”, portraying scientific and social issues such as nuclear power, environmental destruction, and natural disasters for more than 70 years. By engaging the imagination through the question “What if Godzilla appeared?”, visitors gain a personal and tangible understanding of disaster preparedness. The event bridges entertainment and science, creating a learning experience that appeals to both children and adults while highlighting the hopes and risks of scientific progress.
