Independent Study for Kids & Adults: Patterns of Delight 2
こどもとおとなの自由研究 もようわくわく²
An exhibition explores pattern in Japanese craft, from natural motifs to technical mastery, including a Pokemon and Edo-komon collaboration.

Open on 20 July and 21 September (Mondays); Closed on 21 July (Tuesday)
"Independent Study for Kids & Adults: Patterns of Delight 2" is an exhibition devoted to the theme of pattern in Japanese craft. The show is designed to be enjoyed by newcomers and enthusiasts alike, ranging from works by Living National Treasures to a collaboration between Pokemon and Edo-komon stencil dyeing.

Exhibition structure
The exhibition is arranged across three rooms, each approaching pattern from a different angle. "Living Things" focuses on motifs taken from nature and the wishes for longevity, prosperity, and beauty embedded in them. "One and Many" turns to the question of number in composition, from a single fish swimming across a white vase to the rhythm of repeated motifs. "Precision and Surprise" highlights technical mastery, where calculated precision sometimes yields a boldness that appears to teeter on the edge of collapse.
Highlights
A returning highlight is the "Pokemon x Edo-komon" work first shown at the museum's 2023 exhibition "Pokemon x Craft: Great Discoveries in Beauty and Skill", now displayed alongside a new piece created during that exhibition's regional tour.
Visitors of junior high school age and under receive an "Exploration Kit", which includes a workbook of photographs and viewing tips and a pair of "focus glasses" to aid concentration. Children mark their discoveries with stickers and can present their favourite works on an accompanying worksheet. During evening opening hours, adults may also try the kit, while supplies last.
Running concurrently is a special feature on Serizawa Keisuke, a master who devoted his life to the art of pattern-making. Around 20 works are on show, ranging from small preparatory sketches to major folding-screen pieces.
Open until 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays from 17 July to 15 August.
