About the data

How to read this map

Where do the dates come from?

Each prefecture follows one observation tree at its Japan Meteorological Agency station, usually in the prefectural capital. JMA records the day most of the tree has turned (the start of peak color) and the day most of its leaves have fallen (the end of it).

Are these this year's dates?

Until JMA records this season's date for a station, the map shows its 1991-2020 average. Each new observation replaces the average as it comes in; the map updates every morning.

What about the mountains?

Mountains and northern valleys turn two to four weeks earlier than the city tree, so treat each date as the lowland city.
