Immersive Ukiyo-e Exhibition OSAKA
動き出す浮世絵展 OSAKA
This exhibition transforms 300+ ukiyo-e masterworks into immersive installations, with Osaka's edition featuring fragrance by Japanese brand Hatenkō.

The exhibition transforms more than 300 works by celebrated ukiyo-e masters — including Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Kitagawa Utamaro, Tōshūsai Sharaku, and Utagawa Kunisada — into large-scale digital installations using 3DCG animation and projection mapping. Spread across approximately nine immersive zones, the exhibition allows visitors to step inside a dynamically animated ukiyo-e world.
Previously staged in Nagoya, Milan, Kagoshima, and Tokyo, the exhibition has attracted over 350,000 visitors. Its innovative approach to presenting traditional culture has also earned recognition, including the Excellence Award at the CJPF Award 2025, organised by the Cool Japan Public-Private Partnership Platform.
A Multisensory Experience with Fragrance Collaboration
The Osaka edition introduces a collaboration with the Japanese fragrance brand Hatenkō, integrating scent into select exhibition spaces to deepen immersion.
In the “Rei (Elegance)” area, which focuses on bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women), the fragrance Sakigake is used to evoke the refined sensuality found in Kitagawa Utamaro’s works. Meanwhile, the “Miyabi (Refinement)” zone, inspired by Edo-period popular culture, features the scent Hanabi, referencing Andō Hiroshige’s famous depiction of fireworks over Ryōgoku. These fragrances interact with visuals and sound to create a layered sensory experience.
The perfumes featured in the exhibition will also be available for purchase at the venue shop.
Beyond Digital Art
In addition to immersive digital works, the exhibition displays original Edo-period ukiyo-e prints and reproductions, offering historical context and insight into the artists, their techniques, and the culture of the Edo period. The Osaka venue also highlights ukiyo-e connected to the region, presenting the art form through a local lens.
Photography and video recording are permitted throughout the exhibition, encouraging visitors to capture their experience within the animated spaces.
