The National Treasure Matsumoto Castle Ice Sculpture Festival returns this year, continuing its tradition as one of Matsumoto City’s most celebrated winter events. Held against the stunning backdrop of Matsumoto Castle and the Northern Alps, the festival attracts visitors of all ages to enjoy spectacular ice art and lively festivities.

National Ice Carving Contest Championship

The highlight of the festival is the "National Ice Carving Contest Championship", where top-level ice sculptors from across Japan form teams to compete in skill and artistry. Sculpting begins in the evening, with chainsaws buzzing through the night as artists carve intricate ice sculptures. By early morning, the works are completed, and the morning sun casts a sparkling glow on the ice, while at night, the sculptures are illuminated with colorful lights, creating a magical and ever-changing display.

Additional Attractions

Beyond the main ice carving contest, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and entertainment:

  • Giant Ice Slide – a favorite among children

  • Stage Performances – featuring local groups performing taiko drumming, dance, and comedy

  • Food Truck Area – serving local Matsumoto cuisine

  • City Center Events – interactive exhibitions and activities spread throughout the castle town

The festival offers a unique combination of art, culture, and family-friendly fun, making it a must-see winter attraction in Matsumoto.

At Hey Japan!, we strive to keep the events listed on our website as current as possible. However, event organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or modify admission requirements without prior notice. Check official websites before attending any event.
