The Yamashiro Manto-e is an Obon evening ceremony of light held at Yakuoin Onsenji Temple in Yamashiro Onsen. The temple has deep historical roots: its first head priest, Myokaku Shonin, is traditionally credited with creating the aiueo gojuon, the ordered table of the Japanese syllabary. On the night of Obon, lanterns illuminate the wooded walking path within the temple grounds, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere as visitors stroll beneath the trees.
