The Otaru Glass Market is held annually in Otaru during the summer, coinciding with the Otaru Ushio Festival. It takes place along the former Temiya Railway Line and in the courtyard of the Otaru Literary and Art Museum, just a few minutes’ walk from JR Otaru Station. For the first time since 2019, visitors will be able to enjoy the event into the evening, with programs running until 8 in the evening.

Since its inception in 2009, the Otaru Glass Market has become a beloved summer tradition, drawing visitors from across Japan each year. Originally created to promote the city’s glassmaking industry and support local artisans, the event has grown to include around 20 to 40 booths from glass studios throughout Hokkaido and beyond. It offers not only the opportunity to view and purchase beautifully crafted glass items, but also to take part in hands-on experiences and enjoy creative displays.

One of the most iconic attractions is the illuminated wind chime tunnel. Over a hundred glass wind chimes are suspended along the disused railway tracks, their soft, tinkling sounds accompanied by the gentle glow of evening lights - creating a scene that captures the serene beauty of summer nights in Otaru. Visitors can also participate in glassblowing demonstrations, with some sessions allowing guests to create their own pieces under the guidance of skilled artisans. Finished works are later mailed to participants, making for truly memorable keepsakes.

Families with children can enjoy glass-themed quiz rallies, while a special design contest invites elementary and middle school students to submit their own glassware illustrations. Winning designs are brought to life by professional artisans and displayed at the venue, with the completed pieces awarded to the young designers.

The Otaru Glass Market reflects both the city’s deep connection to glass craftsmanship and its vibrant creative spirit. The event blends history, culture, and interactive fun. It offers a unique experience for locals and travellers alike - an evening stroll among wind chimes, a chance to meet artisans, and the quiet magic of glass shimmering in the summer light.
