The Otaru Ushio Festival, which began in 1967, is a vibrant celebration deeply rooted in the history and spirit of Otaru City. Born out of a desire to unify and refresh earlier summer events, the festival honours Otaru’s natural harbour and the sea that has been central to the city’s growth and prosperity.
Originally preceded by the Minato Otaru Commerce, Industry, and Tourism Festival - a collection of separate events like fireworks competitions, hot spring celebrations, and beach festivals - the Ushio Festival was created to focus these activities into a single, dynamic event. It reflects the pride and gratitude of Otaru’s 200,000 residents toward the sea, which has shaped their community and economy.
The festival highlights Otaru’s unique coastal charm, featuring lively parades, spectacular fireworks, and a range of cultural and recreational activities enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. It also showcases the city’s rich tourism resources - sea, mountains, and hot springs - drawing attention to Otaru as a top destination in northern Japan.
The name “Ushio”, meaning “tide” or “current”, symbolises the energetic flow of the festival and the forward momentum of Otaru’s community.
Highlights of the Otaru Ushio Festival
Day 1: Ushio Furekomi
The festival begins with Ushio Furekomi, a vibrant procession that fills the streets with the sound of taiko drums and the spirit of celebration. Dancers parade through the city centre atop floats, spreading festive energy as local dance groups signal the start of the festivities.
Day 2: Ushio Nerikomi
The centrepiece of the festival, Ushio Nerikomi, brings together a large crowd of dancers who move joyfully through the streets to the chant of “Don doko zabūn!”. With enthusiastic participation from local businesses, schools, and community groups, the city transforms into one big, joyful dance floor.
Day 3: Mikoshi Parade & Grand Fireworks Show
On the final day, the Mikoshi Parade (portable shrine) takes to the streets. Carriers from across Hokkaido and beyond join together to shoulder traditional portable shrines, moving through the city with powerful chants of “Eisa!”. The parade’s energy and spirit leave a lasting impression. To close the festival, the Grand Fireworks Show lights up the night sky. The dazzling display can be enjoyed from many spots throughout Otaru, bringing the celebration to a spectacular finish.
Food Stalls & Local Flavours
During all three days, the festival grounds are lined with food stalls offering a taste of Hokkaido - from fresh seafood and crispy zangi (fried chicken) to sweet treats and local canal-side specialties.
The Otaru Ushio Festival is held at various locations throughout Otaru’s city centre. Key venues include Otaru Port No. 3 Wharf, Sakaimachi Street, and the Canal Area.
