Stove Winter Train
ストーブ列車
A retro winter rail journey through Aomori's snowy landscape, where coal-burning stoves warm passengers as they share stories and grill dried squid.

Every winter from December to March, the Tsugaru Railway Line in Aomori transforms into a moving time capsule with its iconic Stove Train. Running between Tsugaru-Goshogawara and Tsugaru-Nakasato, this retro two-car train features coal-burning potbelly stoves, warming passengers as they glide through the snow-covered Tsugaru Plain.
Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and communal. Locals and travelers gather around the glowing stoves, sharing stories and warming their hands. One of the train’s unique delights is the chance to grill dried squid (surume) over the red-hot coals - an unforgettable winter snack often enjoyed with a cup of local sake.
The scenery outside is breathtaking: vast white landscapes, rural towns, and frozen fields roll by slowly, offering a peaceful contrast to the warmth within. For many, it’s more than just a train ride - it’s a nostalgic winter experience rooted in local culture and tradition.
Whether you're a railway fan or a curious traveler, the Stove Train offers a rare chance to slow down and enjoy the quiet beauty of Japan’s snowy north.
