Entry Procedures and Customs
Japan has specific entry requirements and procedures for foreign nationals. Below is an overview to help you prepare for your trip.
Visa Requirements
Japan has visa exemption arrangements with many countries and regions, allowing short-term stays without a visa. The permitted length of stay varies by nationality, typically ranging from 15 to 90 days.
For the most accurate and up-to-date list of countries and regions with visa exemptions, refer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
e-Visa System
Japan offers an electronic visa (e-Visa) system for certain nationalities. Eligible applicants can apply online for a single-entry short-term visa, streamlining the application process. More information is available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ e-Visa portal.
Upcoming Changes: JESTA
Japan is planning to introduce a new electronic travel authorisation system called JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation). This system will require travellers from visa-exempt countries to complete an online registration prior to their trip. The aim is to enhance border security and improve the efficiency of entry procedures. While full implementation is expected by 2030, trial phases may begin earlier.
Before traveling, confirm whether you need a visa based on your nationality and the purpose of your visit. Regularly check official Japanese government sources for updates on entry requirements and procedures, as policies may change. Ensure you have all required documents, including a valid passport, visa (if applicable), and any other necessary paperwork, to facilitate a smooth entry into Japan.
Arriving in Japan
Upon arrival at a Japanese airport, all travellers must undergo standard customs and immigration procedures.
Entry Procedures
- Biometric Data Collection: All foreign nationals are required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and facial photo) at immigration. This process is part of Japan’s border security measures.
- Automated Gates: Major international airports have introduced a Faster Entry System. This system uses automated facial recognition gates. These allow travellers to scan their passports and biometric data for faster processing. Please refer to the Automated Gates User’s Guide for Foreign Nationals for more information.
Customs Declaration
All travellers must submit a Declaration of Accompanied and Unaccompanied Articles. This form details the items you're bringing into Japan and any unaccompanied baggage. Customs declaration forms are typically provided on the plane, ship, or at the customs area upon arrival.
Submission Methods
- Paper Form: Forms for customs declaration are available on the plane, ship, or at customs. Please take a look at the Customs Declaration Form here.
- Electronic Submission: Recommended via the Visit Japan Web, which allows travellers to complete customs and immigration forms in advance. By submitting declarations electronically, travellers simply show a QR code - received after completing the electronic declaration process - at customs upon arrival.
- Electronic Customs Declaration Gates (e-Gates): Travellers can also make customs declarations electronically by using an electronic declaration terminal upon arrival at the airport. The e-Gates are available at major international airports, including Narita, Haneda, Chubu Centrair, and Kansai. For more information, refer to the Japan Customs’ webpage on the Electronic Customs Declaration Gates.
