In recent years, sumo has seen a surge in popularity - so much so that tickets to professional tournaments are now often distributed by lottery. Yet for many international visitors, the world of sumo remains elusive. Traditional sumo training stables can be intimidating environments, with strict rules against talking, eating, and video recording, and require long periods of silent observation in traditional seating.
To bridge this cultural gap, Asakusa Sumo Club offers a unique and welcoming alternative: an interactive sumo showdesigned especially for foreign guests. Hosted by former sumo wrestlers and student athletes, the experience provides an authentic but accessible introduction to Japan’s national sport.
Guests can watch demonstrations of fundamental sumo techniques - from stances and footwork to ceremonial rituals and finishing moves. For those feeling adventurous, there’s even an opportunity to step into the ring and try sumo firsthand - suited up in a sumo costume and matched against a retired wrestler.
The event is paired with a traditional chanko hot pot meal, the staple diet of sumo wrestlers. Carefully prepared by the club’s head chef under the supervision of a former rikishi (sumo wrestler), the special soy sauce-based chanko features a rich blend of chicken, bonito, kelp, and shiitake dashi. The meal is completed with side dishes like inari sushi, dessert, and a small souvenir to take home.
After the meal and demonstration, guests can join a Q&A session with the wrestlers and take commemorative photos on the sumo ring.
Asakusa Sumo Club is committed to making sumo culture approachable, educational, and fun. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a long-time fan, this immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with one of Japan’s oldest and most revered traditions - in the heart of Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district.
