Nagano Binzuru長野びんずる

Nagano Binzuru Dance Festival is a beloved summer event that unites the entire community in motion. The festival blends centuries-old tradition with the energy of modern local life, welcoming both residents and travelers to join the celebration.

First launched in 1971, the Binzuru Festival has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated summer events. Unlike many festivals focused on performances or rituals, this one is fully participatory. Over 10,000 people, from students and shopkeepers to families and visitors, take part. More than 200 groups fill the streets in coordinated but inclusive dance formations. Key thoroughfares such as Chuo-dori and Showa-dori are closed to traffic, turning central Nagano into a festive stage filled with music, color, and rhythm. Lanterns glow overhead as the city pulses with excitement.

At the heart of the festivities is the Binzuru Odori, a group dance inspired by Pindola Bharadvaja (Binzuru), a disciple of Buddha believed to offer healing and protection. His statue at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano remains a revered symbol, often touched by visitors seeking good health.

Dancers, dressed in colorful yukata (casual summer kimono), move in unison, shouting "Sōre!" and rhythmically clapping wooden rice paddles (shamoji) to the beat. The choreography is simple and inviting, making it easy for even first-time participants to join. As night falls, bonfires (kagaribi) are lit along the streets, casting a warm, flickering light over the crowd. The sound of fire crackling, the music, and the chorus of voices create a truly immersive and unforgettable atmosphere.

Though the festival retains its spiritual origins, today's Binzuru Festival is above all a celebration of joy, unity, and community spirit.
