
Nighttime Special Opening: Autumn Foliage and Building Light-Up

To mark the autumn season, the Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum will extend its opening hours for a special evening event. During the event, historic buildings and autumn foliage within the museum grounds will be illuminated, offering visitors a view distinct from the daytime scenery. Interior lights will also be lit inside several buildings. In addition, the event will feature demonstrations and displays related to traditional forms of lighting, including andon (paper lanterns) and gas lamps, as well as hearths and fireplaces in both traditional and Western-style houses.
Highlights
Fire in the Irori (Hearth) of the Tsunashima House: The traditional hearth of this farmhouse will be lit.
Warming by the Fireplace (De Lalande Residence): Enjoy the cozy glow of a lit Western-style fireplace.
Gas Lamp Viewing (Tailor’s Shop): A restored gas lamp inside the tailor’s shop will be specially lit during the event period.
Warmth of the Sento Bathhouse (Kodakara-yu): The men’s bath area will be filled with warm water and illuminated (no bathing allowed).
Exhibit of Traditional Lighting (Mantoku Ryokan): Experience the brightness of andon and oil lamps, and view old lighting tools such as hyousoku (candlesticks).
Paper-Cut Window Art Display: Decorative paper-cut silhouettes inspired by architectural patterns will be displayed on the windows facing Yamanote Street.
Paper-Cut Lantern Workshop (with Sign Language Interpretation): Create paper-cut designs based on the building motifs and use them to make your own lantern. (November 22 only / limited capacity)
Shadow Theatre in a Folk House (with Sign Language Interpretation): Enjoy a storytelling performance using paper-cut silhouettes. (November 23 only / limited capacity)
Bamboo Lantern Pathway: A path lined with bamboo lanterns featuring traditional Japanese patterns and seasonal designs.
Reflection Maple (Takahashi Korekiyo Residence): From the second floor, enjoy the view of autumn foliage reflected on mirror panels, blending with the garden scenery.
Candle Night: Around 1,000 candles will flicker gently, creating a magical atmosphere.
Food Trucks: Enjoy warm drinks and light snacks from various vendors.
Ticket Purchase
The museum uses a date-specific online ticket reservation system. In addition to online tickets, same-day tickets are also available at the museum entrance. High visitor numbers are expected on the days of the ‘Nighttime Special Opening: Autumn Foliage and Building Light-Up’ event, so purchasing online tickets in advance is recommended.
