Kaikai Yokai Festival

怪々YOKAI祭

The Kaikai YOKAI Festival at Toei Kyoto Studio Park brings the mysterious world of Japanese yokai — supernatural creatures, spirits, and monsters from folklore — to life. Blending centuries-old legends with interactive, family-friendly fun, the festival offers a variety of experiences, from parades and live encounters to creative workshops and exhibitions, making it a must-see celebration of Japan’s rich yokai culture.

Highlights

Uzumasa Night Parade of One Hundred Demons
The legendary Hyakki Yagyō ('Parade of One Hundred Demons') — a nighttime procession of yokai from Heian-era Kyoto — returns to the park, offering a spooky, fun, and whimsically charming experience. Visitors can join the “YOKAI Dance Time” and dance alongside the creatures. The event features the original Kaikai YOKAI Festival song.

The parade runs on weekends and public holidays during the festival period. In November, the schedule is 14:30 and 18:00, with a special performance on Saturday, November 15 at 14:30 and 19:00. Exact times are available on the park’s website.

Please note: Schedule and location may change due to weather or operational reasons, and filming may occur during the event.

Kaikai YOKAI Greetings and Exhibits
Throughout the park, yokai appear unexpectedly, offering unique interactions, photo opportunities, and playful encounters. Visitors can enjoy YOKAI stamp rallies in the park and the Arashiyama area, creating colourful ukiyo-e–style yokai illustrations.

Special Exhibition:

  • Yokai map and illustrated guide supervised by producer Shunya Kōno

  • Modern Mononoke art curated by creative director Gaku Ōgaki

  • Cardboard yokai sculptures by students of Seian University of Art and Design

  • Yokai creature displays by the Hyakuyōbako art collective

  • Award-winning works by Kyoto University of Art graduates

During the event, a variety of limited-time yokai-themed food and merchandise is available exclusively at the park.

The mask painting event at the Kaikai YOKAI Festival is open to both adults and children on weekends and public holidays from 12:00 to 17:30 on the 3rd floor of Padio. Participants choose from five types of masks to create their own original designs. The experience fee is 500 yen.

Photo Spots
A giant yokai banner on Padio’s 1st floor and other scattered photo locations throughout the park offer perfect opportunities for memorable photos.

Uzumasa Mononoke Market
Yokai creators from across Japan gather to sell original goods, from authentic to cute designs.

Uzumasa Ghost Storytelling
Inspired by the Edo-period tradition of “Hyaku Monogatari” (telling 100 ghost stories), professional storytellers share mysterious, humorous, and chilling tales during a special two-day event.

Bus Tour: Explore Kyoto’s “Yokai World” and Kaikai YOKAI Night Parade
This day-trip bus tour, produced by Hyakuyōbako, takes participants to hidden “yokai” spots across Kyoto and concludes at the Kaikai YOKAI Festival 2025 at Toei Kyoto Studio Park. Visitors can learn little-known yokai history, experience the festival firsthand, and choose from four different tour routes, each featuring unique locations and guides.
