Tokyo Pride 2025

The Tokyo-based nonprofit organization has made this strategic shift to better connect with the international Pride movement. The main Pride Parade & Festival will take place on June 7-8, 2025, at Yoyogi Park, representing a major departure from the event's 13-year tradition of April celebrations.

This timing change aligns Japan's Pride celebration with the global "Pride Month" in June, which commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York that became a symbol of LGBTQ+ resistance.

Remarkable Growth and Impact

The event has experienced extraordinary growth since its inception. Starting with 4,500 participants in 2012, the event reached a record-breaking 270,000 attendees in April 2024. This expansion reflects the broader social transformation in Japan regarding LGBTQ+ awareness and acceptance.

The movement has attracted diverse supporters including domestic and international companies, government officials, politicians, foreign consulates, media outlets, artists, and civil society organizations.

"Same Life, Same Rights" - A Powerful Message

Tokyo Pride 2025's theme "Same Life, Same Rights" emphasizes that all people, regardless of their LGBTQ+ status, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, birth circumstances, disability, or economic background, deserve equal rights to live authentically.

The organization's statement declares: "People born with the same life should have equal rights to live, regardless of their attributes. To reclaim these rights, legal reforms are necessary."

Focus on Intersectionality and Legal Reform

The 2025 event will address legal reforms, human rights, and equity issues, focusing not only on SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) but also on intersectional challenges. This represents a more comprehensive approach to social justice advocacy.

Despite significant progress in LGBTQ+ visibility and social recognition, many challenges and difficulties faced by LGBTQ+ individuals remain, requiring continued efforts toward visibility and solutions.
