TOKYO RED GARDEN is an autumn light-up of the Japanese garden at Happo-en in Tokyo. After dark, the maples and ginkgo trees and the pond are lit in shades running from orange to red.

Happo-en's garden dates back to the Edo period, with a history of about 400 years. It covers about 10,000 tsubo, roughly 33,000 square metres, with a pond and plantings of maples and ginkgo.

Highlights

The lighting is built as a gradient. Orange gives way to red across the garden, a picture of the leaves deepening as autumn goes on, laid over a single night. The light falls on the trees, on the surface of the pond, which doubles the colors, and on the path that leads in from the main gate.

The 2026 edition: Aki, Tsumugu

The 2026 light-up is the eighth, and the first in two years. Its theme is Aki, Tsumugu (秋、紡ぐ。), roughly autumn, woven. It is also the first since Happo-en's main building reopened after its renewal in October 2025.

For 2026, about 60 lights cover some 160 maple and ginkgo trees. A noren, a fabric curtain made for the event, hangs on the kido-mon (木戸門), the wooden gate at the entrance, except at times when the main building is busy. Mist drifts across the pond.

Inside the main building, the restaurant ALL DAY DINING FUDO serves a RED GARDEN dinner course during the light-up, its dishes planned to follow the leaves as they change color. The first course is baked in a salt crust, a technique taken from Happo-en's wedding cuisine. The dessert pairs persimmon with osmanthus picked in the garden, in a mousse shaped like leaves. An autumn afternoon tea runs at the same time.
