“YOKAI Immersive Experience Exhibition TOKYO: Imagination of Japan” is an immersive digital art museum that combines Japan’s renowned yokai art with cutting-edge visual technology and three-dimensional sculpture.
The exhibition presents a new form of art entertainment in which yokai — supernatural beings beloved across generations — are brought dynamically to life. It is the world’s first immersive digital art museum to offer an experiential encounter with Japanese yokai art through a fusion of advanced digital imaging and sculptural expression.
Drawing on Japan’s rich tradition of yokai imagery, the exhibition features works inspired by themes such as Hyakki Yagyo (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), Hyakumonogatari, oni (demons), tengu (mythical supernatural beings), kappa (folklore water spirit), and tsukumogami (spirits inhabiting inanimate objects and tools), as depicted by artists from the Edo and Meiji periods and beyond. Through state-of-the-art techniques including 3DCG, projection mapping, and holographic screens, the humorous and expressive figures found in traditional yokai paintings and caricatures are transformed into vivid, moving presences. Three-dimensional sculptures further enhance the experience, creating a tangible and immersive yokai world.
With the cooperation of the Iwase Bunko Library in Nishio City — Japan’s first museum dedicated to rare books — and the Yokai Art Museum on Shodoshima Island, the exhibition also provides in-depth interpretations of yokai culture, artworks, and historical context. Visitors can explore how yokai, born from ancient myths and folklore, have evolved over time and continue to influence contemporary pop culture.
