The permanent exhibition has undergone multiple renovations and updates, and in April 2020, the museum's name was changed to "Kagoshima Prefecture History and Art Center Reimeikan" to better reflect the range of art and crafts on display. The museum is located within the grounds of Tsurumaru Castle.
