The Chofu Fireworks Festival stands as one of Tokyo's most unique autumn celebrations, transforming the banks of the Tama River into a spectacular canvas of light and sound. Known for its innovative "Hanabi-llusion" displays that synchronize fireworks with movie soundtracks, this festival celebrates both the art of pyrotechnics and Chofu's identity as Tokyo's "movie town."
A Legacy of Light Since 1933
First held in 1933, the festival was temporarily suspended during the Pacific War before resuming as the All Japan Export Promotion Fireworks Competition from 1954. This post-war revival established its reputation for beauty and technical excellence. The 2025 festival marks the 40th anniversary, coinciding with Chofu City's 70th municipal anniversary, promising an even more spectacular September event.
The Hanabi-llusion Experience
Chofu's pioneering "Hanabi-llusion" concept combines "hanabi" (fireworks) and "illusion" through computer-controlled synchronization of fireworks with movie music. This innovation reflects Chofu's cultural identity as a center for film production, adding cinematic magic to traditional Japanese celebration. Each explosion is precisely timed to match musical crescendos, creating a multi-sensory experience that transforms viewing into immersive performance.
Spectacular Scale and Artistry
The 2025 festival features approximately 10,000 fireworks over one hour, including traditional Japanese shakudama (large shells), modern starmines, and the signature 70-shot large shell display. "Takumi's Fireworks" showcases special shells from expert pyrotechnicians across Japan, representing the pinnacle of Japanese fireworks artistry. The riverside setting creates a natural amphitheater where fireworks reflect off the water for additional visual depth.
Venues and Viewing Options
Three main viewing areas face the Tamagawa River: the Keio Tamagawa Venue (near Tamagawa Children's Park), the Denki-Tsushin University Ground Venue, and the Fuda Venue (near Tamagawa Citizens' Plaza). Paid seating ranges from ¥4,500 to ¥65,000 for ten people, providing unobstructed views with amenities. Free viewing areas are available near Keio Tamagawa Station and Tamagawa Citizen Square, though early arrival is essential due to limited space.
Timing and Schedule
Scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, with opening ceremony at 18:00 and fireworks from 18:15 - 19:15. This autumn timing offers cooler temperatures and optimal darkness, setting it apart from typical summer festivals. The event will be canceled in severe weather, so visitors should monitor forecasts before traveling.
