Chikugo River Fireworks Festival

The Chikugo River Fireworks Festival is a large-scale summer fireworks event held in Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, along the Chikugo River, the longest river in Kyushu. The festival attracts a substantial number of spectators each year and is regarded as one of the region’s major seasonal events.

The origins of fireworks on the Chikugo River are traditionally traced back more than 350 years to fireworks dedicated at Suitengū Shrine, reflecting the historical association between the river and local religious practices. The modern festival in its current form, however, was established in 1956 as a community event to celebrate and honour the cultural significance of the Chikugo River.

The fireworks display is staged from multiple launch sites along both riverbanks, allowing spectators to view synchronized fireworks across the width of the river, which is approximately 200 meters at the festival area. In recent years, around 18,000 fireworks have been launched during the event. The display typically lasts about 90 minutes, though this may vary depending on conditions and programming.

Viewing areas are spread along both sides of the river, including locations near Kurume Station and Kurume River Port. These areas provide access to transportation and food stalls, while sections on the opposite bank are generally less crowded. Visitors often arrive well in advance to secure viewing spots along the embankments.
