Himeji Yukata Festival姫路 ゆかたまつり
The Himeji Yukata Festival is a traditional summer event held annually from June 21 to 22. With a history spanning over 260 years, it remains a beloved part of the city’s cultural calendar.
The festival originated in 1742 when Sakakibara Masamine, then lord of the Himeji Domain, relocated Osakabe Shrine from inside Himeji Castle to the grounds of Chōgenji Temple outside the castle walls. During the relocation ceremony, commoners who were unable to prepare formal clothing in time were permitted to attend wearing yukata—light cotton kimono typically worn in the summer. This led to the festival being affectionately known as the “Yukata Festival”.
Throughout the two-day celebration, events take place across central Himeji, especially around Osakabe Shrine, Ōtemae Street, and the Sannomaru Square near Himeji Castle. Highlights include parades of children in yukata, processions led by “Castle Queens”, folk performances, and yukata fashion shows. Visitors wearing yukata also receive free admission to local attractions such as Himeji Castle, Koko-en Garden, and the city zoo.
At its height, the festival featured a large number of food and game stalls, making it one of the largest summer festivals in western Japan. Although the number of stalls was reduced in 2013, the event continues to be a cherished early summer tradition, with people of all ages enjoying the festive atmosphere dressed in their yukata.
