Ishioka Spring Shishi Festival
石岡 春の獅子祭り
Ishioka's spring celebration showcases lion dance culture through performances by neighborhood groups, competitions across age categories, and food vendors and carnival games.

Ishioka City is regarded as one of the leading centres of horojishi (lion dance) culture in the Kanto region. The city's autumn festival, known as the Ishioka Festival and counted among the greatest Kanto festivals, attracts over 500,000 visitors annually. The Spring Shishi Festival was established to offer an additional seasonal occasion for this cultural tradition to be experienced and shared.
This year’s event will feature performances by lion dance groups from approximately 20 neighbourhoods across the city, accompanied by drums and flutes. A lion dance contest will be held across several categories, including elementary, middle, and high school students as well as adults. A separate open-entry contest will also take place, in which participants may perform with their own lion costumes. Additional programming includes performances on the main stage, hands-on experience booths, a grand lion procession, and an awards ceremony.
The venue will host around 40 food vendors, several carnival-style game booths, and merchandise stalls offering festival goods. Two local high schools – Ishioka Second High School and Ishioka Commercial High School – will also be present with food items produced by their students.
The event is held rain or shine in light weather, though it will be cancelled in the event of severe conditions. No parking is available at the venue; a temporary parking lot is located near the east exit of Ishioka Station on the JR Joban Line, which is also accessible on foot in approximately 12 minutes.
