Dating back to the early Edo period, the Kasedori Festival is one of Kaminoyama’s most distinctive folk events, celebrating wishes for safety, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest. The festival’s name comes from the bird-shaped straw coats (Kendai) worn by the performers, who embody the spirit of the Kasedori — a sacred bird said to bring good fortune.
The festivities begin at the front gate of Kaminoyama Castle, where prayers are offered for a prosperous year. From there, the Kasedori parade through the streets, accompanied by energetic chants and dances. Spectators are encouraged to take part by splashing “celebration water” from buckets onto the performers — a symbolic act believed to bring blessings, fire protection, and success in business, especially for water-related trades.
The straw that naturally falls from the performers’ Kendai is considered a lucky charm. According to tradition, tying a strand in a girl’s hair ensures long, beautiful black hair. Visitors are asked not to pull straw directly from the costumes — only fallen pieces should be collected and cherished.
Beyond the ritual itself, the festival offers a lively atmosphere filled with street performances, local food, and traditional crafts. Visitors can enjoy Kasedori-themed merchandise such as T-shirts, hand towels, and handmade straps, as well as Kasedori Udon, a limited-edition noodle dish inspired by the event. Fire-safety talismans are also available as souvenirs of this auspicious day.
Both joyful and spiritual, the Kasedori Festival beautifully preserves Kaminoyama’s centuries-old traditions while inviting everyone to share in the warmth and energy of this winter celebration.
