The event features projection mapping on the tenshu (main tower) of Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s five remaining original castle keeps and the oldest surviving five-tier, six-level tenshu among the National Treasures. Dynamic, atmospheric visuals will be projected onto the castle’s walls and stone foundations.

The imagery includes traditional ukiyo-e prints depicting the historic mercantile town of Matsumoto, decorative folding screens, motifs of Matsumoto’s traditional crafts such as Matsumoto temari thread balls and lanterns, and seasonal scenes of cherry blossoms and flowers from the Northern Alps.

In addition to the projection mapping on the main tower, visitors can enjoy interactive light content along the garden pathways, projection mapping on the castle gates, illuminations throughout Matsumoto Castle Park.

Three Themed Stages Across the Winter Season

The event will unfold in three phases, each offering a different projection theme:

  • Phase 1: “A Castle Beyond Time – A Tale of Light” Dec 13, 2025 – Jan 7, 2026

  • Phase 2: “Memories of Light – A Digest of Iconic Scenes” Jan 8 – Jan 28, 2026

  • Phase 3: “Blossoming Light – The Beginning of Spring” Jan 29 – Feb 15, 2026

Each show consists of approximately 9 minutes of content, repeated continuously with short intermissions.

The event will take place rain or snow, though severe weather or emergencies may cause interruptions. Some installations outside the main tower may temporarily close for maintenance or other events.
