Okawachiyama Furin (Wind Bell Festival)

During the Okawachiyama Wind Bell Festival, potteries throughout the village showcase their beautiful and distinctive wind bells, known as furin. Traditionally made from materials such as glass, ceramic, or metal, furin are hung under eaves and windows in summer, where their gentle chimes are believed to bring a sense of coolness during the hottest months. In Japan, the sound of furin is closely associated with summer and is appreciated as much for its calming effect as for its craftsmanship and design.

In addition to wind bell displays and sales, the festival also features the Firebrick Lantern Festival, which adds a fantastic and mysterious atmosphere to the pottery village as lanterns illuminate the streets after sunset. Both the Wind Bell Festival and the Firebrick Lantern Festival take place in mid-July in Okawachiyama, creating a seasonal celebration that blends traditional craftsmanship, sound, and light.
