The Hirosaki Castle Yuki-Doro Festival (Snow Lantern Festival) transforms Hirosaki Castle Park, a site famous for its cherry blossoms, into a magical winter landscape each year. The festival began in 1977 and features citizen-made snow lanterns, designed to bring warmth and enjoyment to the long, harsh winters of northern Japan. Around 150 snow lanterns and sculptures of various sizes are installed throughout the park. Illuminated mini kamakura (dome-shaped snow huts) and snow statues create a mystical atmosphere alongside the lit-up castle and ancient pine trees.

Around 300 candle-lit mini kamakura line the lotus pond from the castle’s main enclosure, offering a striking display of snow and light. At the main venue, Shin-no-maru, visitors can enjoy large snow sculptures modeled after historical buildings and a giant snow slide, providing interactive experiences for all ages.

In addition to the lanterns and sculptures, the festival features a variety of seasonal activities and performances, including winter-themed games, live music, cultural demonstrations, and interactive experiences designed for families and children. Local food vendors and craft stalls also operate within the park, allowing visitors to enjoy regional cuisine and souvenirs while exploring the festival grounds.

The festival is held annually in early February, with snow lanterns and sculptures illuminated from late afternoon until evening. It has become a major winter event in Hirosaki, attracting visitors from across Japan to experience the unique combination of snow, light, and historical scenery, along with seasonal entertainment and cultural activities.

At Hey Japan!, we strive to keep the events listed on our website as current as possible. However, event organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or modify admission requirements without prior notice. Check official websites before attending any event.
