The Shinkawa Market Festival is a traditional community event held in the central area of Ube City. Its origins date back to the late 18th century, when Nakatsuse Shrine was established in 1797. By the late Meiji period, a market for agricultural tools and daily necessities was held in conjunction with the shrine’s annual festival, forming the foundation of today’s event.

This historical market tradition has been passed down and developed into a large-scale urban festival centred on the idea of the ichi (traditional market). The modern festival takes place mainly along National Route 190 in front of Ube City Hall and surrounding downtown areas, where a wide variety of events and activities are held.

Key features of the Shinkawa Market Festival include food and retail stalls operated primarily by local restaurants and shops, sales of agricultural and marine products, handmade crafts, and test-run booths by local businesses. Family-oriented attractions such as displays of working vehicles, including police cars and fire engines, are also part of the program, along with sports and activity events designed for children.

Cultural performances play an important role in the festival. Yosakoi dance performances by teams from within and outside the city are staged throughout the day, and student-led programs showcase school activities and initiatives. In addition, a diversity-themed relay race is held, highlighting participation across various categories.

A central religious element of the festival is the Goshinkō procession associated with Nakatsuse Shrine. During this procession, the portable shrine (mikoshi) travels through the city centre, stopping at several temporary resting places, including Shinkawa Bridge, Ginten Plaza, and Showamachi 1-chome. At each location, Shinto rites such as chigo kagura (children kagura) are performed, reinforcing the festival’s connection to local spiritual traditions.
