The Takaoka Tanabata Festival is rooted in the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi, star-crossed lovers separated by the Milky Way who are allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. This festival not only celebrates this romantic tale but also fosters a sense of community and cultural pride among the residents of Takaoka. This vibrant event, which usually takes place in early August, transforms the city into a dazzling display of colourful decorations and joyful festivities. The streets of Takaoka are adorned with beautiful Tanabata decorations, including large, intricate bamboo displays and colourful paper streamers. These decorations symbolise the wishes and dreams of the festival-goers, adding a magical atmosphere to the city.

One of the main attractions is the Tanabata parade, where participants dressed in traditional yukata (summer kimono) and vibrant costumes march through the streets. The parade features music, dance, and a variety of performances that captivate the audience and celebrate the cultural heritage of Takaoka.

Throughout the festival, various cultural performances take place, including traditional Japanese music, dance, and theatrical displays. These performances provide a rich cultural experience and showcase the artistic talents of the local community. The festival offers a range of star-themed activities for visitors of all ages. These include making traditional paper wishes (tanzaku), which are hung on bamboo branches, and interactive workshops where participants can create their own Tanabata decorations.

A bustling night market is set up during the festival, offering a wide array of delicious street food, local delicacies, and traditional sweets.

At Hey Japan!, we strive to keep the events listed on our website as current as possible. However, event organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or modify admission requirements without prior notice. Check official websites before attending any event.
