Child fares are for ages 6 to 11. From age 12, the adult fare applies. Children under 6 ride free unless they need a reserved seat. Age is counted on the date you buy the pass.
What's covered
- JR East lines in the area, shinkansen included
- Tobu Railway through trains from JR stations to Nikko: reserved ordinary seats on the Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa limited expresses
- Regular Tobu trains, rapids included, from Shimo-imaichi to Tobu-Nikko and Kinugawa-Onsen
- Tokyo Monorail and the Rinkai Line (Tokyo Waterfront Area Rapid Transit)
- Izu Kyuko Line, Fujikyu Railway lines and the Joshin Dentetsu Line
- Saitama New Urban Transit between Omiya and the Railway Museum
- The Tokaido Shinkansen, which is run by a different company (JR Central)
- Green Cars and GranClass, which cost extra
- Reserved seats on the Fujisan Express and Fujisan View Express, and Fuji Tozan Densha trains on the Fujikyu lines, which cost extra
- Tobu limited expresses that start and end at Tobu stations: at least one end of the trip must be a JR station, and between Kurihashi and Shimo-imaichi only the through trains from JR lines can be used
How to use it
The pass runs for 3 consecutive days from a start day you choose, long enough for an overnight trip out of Tokyo. Gala Yuzawa Station only opens in winter and spring.
JR East's own example: Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa and back to Omiya by Joetsu Shinkansen, then Omiya to Tobu-Nikko and back to Shinjuku on the Nikko limited express, all in reserved seats, costs about ¥21,500 in regular fares. The pass covers the same trip for ¥16,000.
Before you buy
A child's age is the age on the date of purchase, and you may need a passport to prove it. There are no youth or student fares. You can only hold one JR Tokyo Wide Pass at a time, so two passes with overlapping dates aren't possible.
Questions
Can I use the JR Tokyo Wide Pass on the Tokaido Shinkansen?
No. The Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo to Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka) is run by JR Central, not JR East, so the pass doesn't cover it.
Does it cover the trip to Nikko?
Yes. It covers reserved ordinary seats on the Nikko, Kinugawa and SPACIA Kinugawa limited expresses that run through from JR lines onto the Tobu Railway, plus regular Tobu trains from Shimo-imaichi to Tobu-Nikko and Kinugawa-Onsen. Tobu limited expresses that start and end at Tobu stations are not included.
Can I use it to get to Mt Fuji?
The Fujikyu Railway lines are included. Reserved seats on the Fujisan Express and Fujisan View Express, and Fuji Tozan Densha trains, cost extra.
Is the JR Tokyo Wide Pass worth it?
It pays off with two long trips in three days. JR East's example: Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa and back to Omiya by shinkansen, then a round trip to Nikko, costs about ¥21,500 in regular reserved-seat fares, against ¥16,000 for the pass.
Do children need their own pass?
Children aged 6 to 11 need a child pass (¥8,000); 12 and over pay the adult fare. Children under 6 don't need a pass unless they need a reserved seat. Age is counted on the date of purchase.
Can I ride in the Green Car or GranClass?
Only by paying a separate fee on top of the pass.
