Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses

The Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farmhouses, located within Hattori Ryokuchi Park in Toyonaka City, is an outdoor museum showcasing a collection of 12 traditional farmhouses from across Japan, all dating from the Edo period (17th–19th century). The museum features carefully restored homes along with daily life artifacts, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the architecture and lifestyle of historical Japanese rural communities.

The houses are of the following styles:

  • A gassho-zukuri house from Shirakawa Village, Ono District, Gifu Prefecture
  • A magariya (L-shaped farmhouse) from southern Iwate Prefecture
  • A takakura (raised storehouse) from Amami Oshima

The museum frequently hosts a variety of events, special exhibitions, and hands-on experiences, including stone mill demonstrations, traditional craft and dressing workshops, tea ceremonies, and weaving sessions.

Hattori Ryokuchi Park is a large, versatile green space offering something for everyone. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy tennis courts, a softball field, artificial turf soccer field, and futsal courts. The park also features the Hattori Ryokuchi Equestrian Center, an outdoor music hall, Waterland, a barbecue square with restaurants, a botanical garden with seasonal flowers, forested walking paths, and playgrounds for children. In addition, the park has areas and facilities suitable for organising a variety of events, making it a perfect destination for outdoor fun, sports, family activities, and gatherings.
