Sankeien Garden
三景園
A six-hectare strolling garden beside Hiroshima Airport, laid out in three zones that stand for the mountains, the countryside and the sea of Hiroshima.
Sankeien is a Japanese garden of about six hectares at Mihara, a few minutes on foot from the terminal at Hiroshima Airport. It was made to mark the opening of the airport.
It is laid out as a strolling garden, with paths running past raised ground and a pond. The design takes the scenery of the prefecture as its subject, and the ground is divided into three zones: one for the mountains and valleys of Hiroshima, one for its countryside, and one for the Seto Inland Sea.
Each season has its own flowering. Plum comes in March, and there is a festival for it. Peonies and azaleas open in May, alongside the new leaves. June the garden holds a flower festival for its hydrangeas, thousands of plants of many kinds. In November the maples turn, and there is a festival for those as well.
