More about this place

This touring exhibition looks at how Capcom makes its video games, from the pixel art of its early titles to current 3D technology. Its Shiga showing is at Sagawa Art Museum in Moriyama, organized by the museum and the Yomiuri Shimbun with special cooperation from Capcom.

Capcom and the tour

Capcom was founded in Osaka in 1983. Its game series include Street Fighter, Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

The exhibition opened at Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka in 2025 and travelled on to Nagoya, Tottori, Tokyo and Niigata. Sagawa Art Museum is the last venue on the official list. The corners on show change from venue to venue, and several from earlier venues are not part of the Shiga showing, among them the Dante projection mapping, the Monster Hunter 3D diorama and the Resident Evil walkthrough.

Highlights

Much of the material was drawn by hand by the developers: original art for game packages and posters, character setting sheets, planning documents, specifications and rough sketches. Some of the planning documents date from the company's first years, about forty years ago, and the Shiga showing has more of them than the first venue in Osaka did.

Four large hand-drawn artworks of the Street Fighter series are new to the exhibition in Shiga.

On the technical side, a life-size figure of Chun-Li from Street Fighter shows through projection mapping how a realistic 3DCG character is built up. Facial tracking mirrors stand in the same part of the exhibition.

Several corners are hands-on. At the Capcom Pixel Art Lab, visitors draw pixel art of past Capcom characters on a tablet, and motion capture mirrors let them move as a game character. A sound theater and a tunnel of new character animation, Characters on Parade, complete the exhibition.

The museum shop sells the official catalogue along with stationery and other goods for the exhibition.
