The Chofu Cinema Festival 2027 celebrates filmmaking and the city’s rich cinematic heritage, providing opportunities for audiences to enjoy and engage with film while promoting cultural arts and regional vitality. Established in 2019, the festival spotlights filmmakers and production talent, connecting with the many film and visual media companies based in Chofu, such as Kadokawa Daiei Studio, Nikkatsu Chofu Studio, Django Film, Takatsu Decoration Art, Shirogumi, and Toei Labo Tech.
Chofu, located in the southeastern Tama area of Tokyo, has long been associated with Japan’s film industry. Its cinematic history began in 1933 with the opening of Tamagawa Studio by Nihon Eiga Co., chosen for its natural landscapes suitable for both period and contemporary films, and its high-quality groundwater essential for film processing. Over the following decades, major studios including Nikkatsu, Daiei, and independent production companies established themselves in the city, earning Chofu the nickname “Oriental Hollywood”. Today, the city retains a strong cluster of over 40 film and media-related companies and continues to host film-related landmarks, monuments, and exhibitions honouring actors, directors, and iconic productions.
The Chofu Cinema Festival features a wide range of films across genres and eras, accompanied by discussions, workshops, and special screenings that provide insight into the filmmaking process. The festival also celebrates local and student filmmakers, including projects from initiatives such as the High School Film Contest in Movie Town Chofu. By focusing on the creators behind the screen, the event emphasises Chofu’s ongoing role as a hub for cinema, while offering a diverse program for film enthusiasts of all ages.
The festival takes place at venues across Chofu, including the Chofu City Cultural Hall “Tazukuri”, Chofu City Green Hall, and AEON Cinema Theatus Chofu, and is supported by local government, cultural organisations, and industry partners. It represents a continuation of the city’s long-standing commitment to film, providing both entertainment and educational experiences that highlight Chofu’s unique cinematic identity.
