Hirosaki Neputa Festival

The Hirosaki Neputa Festival is a traditional summer festival held annually in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, and is widely known for its large illuminated neputa floats. These floats, some reaching up to 10 meters in height, are constructed from bamboo frames covered with washi paper and painted in vivid colours. Their designs typically depict warriors, legendary figures, and scenes from Japanese history and folklore. Lit from within, the floats create a striking visual effect as they move through the city after sunset.

During the festival, the streets of Hirosaki host nightly parades in which the neputa floats are carried and maneuvered by local teams. The processions are accompanied by taiko drums, flutes, and the distinctive chant “Yah-Yah-Doh”, which helps set the rhythm and energise participants. Performers wear traditional festival attire, contributing to the lively yet orderly atmosphere.

In addition to the parades, the festival features supporting cultural elements such as regional music, reflecting the area’s local traditions. Along the parade routes, temporary food stalls offer classic festival fare, including grilled squid, yakisoba, and kakigōri (shaved ice), allowing visitors to experience the event as both a visual and culinary celebration.

The Hirosaki Neputa Festival is deeply rooted in community participation. Residents of all ages take part in float construction, rehearsals, and the parades themselves, reinforcing local identity and continuity. This strong civic involvement has helped preserve the festival as an important cultural tradition of Hirosaki and the wider Tsugaru region.
