Shuga-ten is an autumn fair of shohin bonsai (小品盆栽), bonsai up to about 20 cm tall, small enough to hold in the palm of a hand. The Japan Shohin-Bonsai Association holds it at Ueno Green Club in Tokyo. It brings together an exhibition of trees kept by the association's members and a market where bonsai dealers from around Japan sell trees, pots and tools.
The exhibition
Members' trees are shown in display seats. Each seat sets bonsai together with a hanging scroll and a soe (添え), a small companion plant, in one arrangement.
Bonsai shops from across Japan take part in the sale. Their stock runs from seedlings and mini bonsai, some for a few thousand yen, to first-class trees.
Bonsai pots, tools, display stands and books are sold as well.
The 2026 edition
The 2026 fair is the 34th. Alongside it runs the second Contemporary Small Pot Artists Exhibition, with divisions for clay, glazed and painted pots made by association members. Free lessons during the fair cover the care of shimpaku juniper, black pine and satsuki azalea, and how to propagate kusamono, small grasses and flowering plants grown in pots. Every visitor receives a mini calendar made by the association.
The Japan Shohin-Bonsai Association was founded in May 1985. It also holds Gafu-ten, a winter shohin bonsai exhibition in Kyoto.
