Wara Art Festival

The Wara Art Festival is a unique event that transforms rice straw — a familiar material in rural Niigata — into massive works of art. Created through collaboration between university students and local residents, these sculptures celebrate creativity, tradition, and the beauty of the region. The festival highlights the charm of Nishikan Ward both within and beyond Niigata, fostering community spirit and attracting visitors from across Japan.

The Wara Art Festival began in 2006, when students from Musashino Art University collaborated with the Iwamuro Onsen Tourism Association to create straw sculptures as part of a cultural exchange. It became a city-sponsored event in 2008 and has since grown into one of Niigata’s most creative and beloved seasonal celebrations.

This year’s theme, “Mythical Beasts of Echigo”, features five dynamic straw sculptures inspired by legendary creatures infused with local elements. Students from Musashino Art University, Tohoku University of Art and Design, and Nagaoka Institute of Design have joined forces with community volunteers to bring these extraordinary creations to life.

Located in the scenic Uwasekigata Park, the festival site offers sweeping views of Mount Kakuda and the Niigata countryside. The park is a beloved local spot for walking, picnics, and seasonal flowers — from cherry blossoms in spring to sunflowers and cosmos later in the year.
