YOSAKOI Soran FestivalYOSAKOIソーラン祭り
In June, when Sapporo is covered in fresh greenery, the city transforms into a stage—centered around Odori Park and extending to locations such as Sapporo Ekimae-dori, Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza, and Susukino. These areas, usually known for shopping, business, and nightlife, come alive with color, music, and dance during the YOSAKOI Soran Festival. The YOSAKOI Soran Festival began in 1992, rooted in Kochi Prefecture's Yosakoi Festival. It was born from a mix of the Yosakoi festival's use of naruko clappers -farming tools and Hokkaido's traditional folk song, Soran Bushi.
Dancers in vibrant costumes, holding naruko, move in rhythm with the melody of Soran Bushi. Their boundless energy fills the city, wrapping the streets in the heat and excitement of the festival.
The first YOSAKOI Soran Festival featured just 10 teams and 1,000 dancers, drawing an audience of 200,000. Today, the festival welcomes around 270 teams, 27,000 dancers, and 2 million spectators. What began in Hokkaido has grown nationwide and even reached audiences abroad.
Regardless of age, background, or occupation, the joy of dance unites participants and spectators alike. The festival continues to expand as a celebration that transcends regions and generations. The YOSAKOI Soran Festival remains dedicated to bringing inspiration and energy to people and communities. There are approximately 15 sites for the YOSAKOI Soran Festival across Sapporo. During the event, sightseeing spots, commercial areas, and major streets transform into open stages. Most locations are freely accessible without charge.
Highlights
Naruko (鳴子)
Originally used in rice fields to scare away birds with their sound, naruko were once practical farming tools. After being incorporated into dance at the Kochi Yosakoi Festival, they became a symbolic and indispensable part of YOSAKOI festivals across Japan.
Soran Bushi
A traditional folk song from Hokkaido, Soran Bushi was sung by fishermen during herring fishing. Its powerful rhythm, paired with the iconic "Yāren Sōran" chant, expresses the strength and spirit of the sea.
