Dontaku Square, known locally as Dontaku Hiroba, is the main festival route that stretches 1.27 kilometres along Meiji-dori Avenue between Gofukumachi intersection and Tenjin in Fukuoka. This central thoroughfare transforms into the heart of Japan's largest Golden Week festival during the Hakata Dontaku celebration.
The square serves as the primary stage for one of Japan's largest festivals, attracting typically around two million visitors over two days. During the festival period, this major thoroughfare is closed to vehicles and becomes the stage for the Dontaku Parade, where teams representing local companies and groups, known as Dontaku-tai, march, dance, and perform as thousands line the route.
The festival's name originates from the Dutch word zondag, meaning "Sunday" or "holiday", reflecting Fukuoka's historical connections to Dutch trade during Japan's isolation period. The festivities have roots stretching back over 840 years, beginning with the Hakata Matsubayashi, the festival's historic core.
