Yamashita Park Rose Garden

Future Rose Garden

Nestled within Yamashita Park – Yokohama's most beloved waterfront park, built on land reclaimed from the rubble of the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake – the Rose Garden reopened in April 2016 following a full renovation, and carries the name "Future Rose Garden".

The garden was redesigned to offer a more dynamic and layered visual experience, with climbing roses and standard-trained roses creating varied heights and textures throughout the space. Rather than starting fresh, the renovation preserved the existing rose stock, maintaining continuity with the garden's long history while introducing new perennial plantings that ensure year-round interest beyond the peak blooming seasons.

The garden also has a practical philosophy at its heart. Roses have long had a reputation for being demanding to grow, and the Future Rose Garden aims to change that perception. Disease- and pest-resistant varieties have been selected with home gardeners in mind, so that visitors can take inspiration from what they see and feel encouraged to grow roses themselves. Easy maintenance is a guiding principle of the garden's design.

Today the garden holds approximately 1,900 plants across around 160 varieties, making it one of the most diverse rose collections in the region. As its name suggests, the Future Rose Garden is envisioned as a living symbol of Yokohama – a place that carries the history of roses from the past into the future, and serves as the city's signature garden.
