Future Train Kyoto Diner & Cafe

Future Train Kyoto Diner & Cafe is a restaurant and entertainment venue that opened on September 20, 2025, in the Umekoji area of Kyoto. It is the first restaurant in Japan to be built on a disused railway viaduct, and is positioned as both a dining destination and a cultural landmark within an ongoing urban revitalisation effort in the Kyoto Station western district.

Concept and Structure

The venue is structured as a series of train cars, evoking both a train in motion and a station platform. The overall theme — described as "a future-bound train powered by imagination" — frames the entire experience, from the art installation in the lead car to the dining areas and terrace seating.

Car 1, named "Future Bird”, is the centrepiece of the venue. It is a repurposed Limited Express Thunderbird (Series 681) train car, previously operated on the Kyoto–Hokuriku route, which was transported by road from the Suita General Rolling Stock Facility and installed on the viaduct by crane. The exterior has been repainted in deep red kōbai tones, a reference to the plum blossoms associated with the Umekoji area. The interior has been transformed into an immersive art space themed around "the engine room of a future-bound train", combining retro-futurist décor with CG visuals, lighting, and sound. The spatial production for Car 1 was carried out by IMAGICA EEX, a digital creative company, in collaboration with Masuda Sebastian, an artist known for his work in Kawaii culture.

Cars 2 and 3 house the main dining areas. Car 3 features box seating with a lounge atmosphere. Car 5, added at the time of the grand opening, offers terrace seating adjacent to the railway tracks.

Future Imagination Course

A reservation-only dining experience, the "Future Imagination Course" combines an approximately 20-minute immersive ride experience in Car 1 with a seven-dish course meal. It is offered on Wednesday through Saturday evenings, with boarding beginning at 18:30 and the session running for two hours. The course is open to guests of middle school age and above.

Characters

Two original characters serve as guides throughout the venue. Birdy Buddy, identifiable by a pink hat and colourful tail, acts as the conductor of Car 1 and accompanies guests from arrival to departure. Pink Bird, dressed in a uniform referencing pink feathers, serves as the in-journey attendant and appears throughout the narrative arc of the immersive experience.
