Returning to Tokyo with expanded content, the exhibition traces more than six decades of Sanrio history while examining the development of “kawaii” culture in Japan. Through rare designs, archival materials, and merchandise, it explores how the company shaped and promoted a new aesthetic sensibility that grew into a global cultural phenomenon.

More than 200 Sanrio characters will be featured – making this the largest character display in the exhibition’s history. From internationally recognized figures to lesser-known creations, the exhibition also presents a large-scale display of nostalgic goods released over the years. Additional new content will offer deeper insight into the background and evolution of the characters.

Exhibition Highlights

Chapter 1: The Beginnings of Kawaii
At the time of its founding, Sanrio had not yet created original characters. Approximately 15 years later, Hello Kitty made her debut in 1974. This section explores how the company developed its concept of “kawaii” prior to character creation, focusing on the early years and the values that shaped its direction. Featured character: My Melody.

Chapter 2: The Birth of Original Characters
Sanrio set out to create characters it could freely develop and manage. This chapter examines the trial-and-error process behind the creation of its original characters and reveals insights into their origins. Featured characters: Little Twin Stars (Kiki and Lala).

Chapter 3: The Secret of Hello Kitty’s Popularity
For more than 50 years, Hello Kitty has remained one of Sanrio’s most beloved characters. This section analyses the distinctive qualities that have sustained her popularity across generations and cultures. Featured character: Pompompurin.

Chapter 4: Growing Kawaii Together with Fans
A defining aspect of Sanrio’s philosophy is cultivating “kawaii” in collaboration with its audience. This chapter highlights the role of the "Ichigo Shinbun" (Strawberry News) publication and examines how fan engagement contributed to character development. Featured character: Kuromi.
