Held annually in Takayama City, the Shizukumiya Festival is one of the region's most distinctive spring celebrations, bringing together local tradition, sake culture, and communal ritual in the historic streets of Hida Takayama.

The centrepiece of the festival is a procession of 22 sake barrel mikoshi (portable shrines), carried through the city by young people from the Hida region. The mikoshi depart from and return to the plaza in front of Takayama Jinya, the former government outpost that remains one of the city's most iconic landmarks, winding through the surrounding streets in a display of energy and local pride.

The festival has two distinct purposes: to celebrate the completion of the year's new sake (shinshu), and to pray for an abundant harvest of the five grains. Central to both is Kami no Shizuku – sacred sake brewed from rice cultivated by festival committee members themselves, from the rice-planting stage through to completion. On the day of the festival, this sake is offered for limited sale and served complimentarily to visitors at the Jinya Plaza venue.

A highlight of the procession is the ritual performed at the Miyamae Bridge riverbank along the Miya River, where participants, sake, and the mikoshi come together in a water-entry ceremony (nyusui) for purification and the warding off of misfortune. The ritual is accompanied by tezutsu hanabi – hand-held fireworks in which individuals hold the firework tube as it ignites – a tradition closely associated with festivals in the Tokai and Hida regions.

The Jinya Plaza venue also hosts a music stage, food trucks, food stalls, and a display of the sarubobo mikoshi – a reference to the traditional Hida folk charm that has long been a symbol of the region. The festival opens with a purification ceremony for the new sake at Hida Ichinomiya Minashi Shrine, followed by a kagami-wari barrel-breaking ceremony marking the formal start of festivities.

Rooted in gratitude for the harvest and prayers for the prosperity of the local community, the Shizukumiya Festival reflects the close relationship between Hida Takayama's identity and its centuries-old sake brewing culture.
