Strawberry Hunt in the Land of Oz

Keisei Rose Garden in Chiba Prefecture, the largest rose-themed park in the Kanto region, is once again hosting its seasonal strawberry picking event, “Strawberry Hunt in the Land of Oz”. First launched in 2021, this event offers a decorative and story-driven take on strawberry picking, combining fresh fruit with themed design and light entertainment.

This year’s theme is “Rainbow”. Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, the strawberry picking area features a colourful, immersive setting that goes beyond the typical greenhouse experience. A large rainbow ornament, approximately six meters wide, stretches over the strawberry lanes, creating a visually striking space where visitors can enjoy picking strawberries in a playful, fantasy-like atmosphere.

Strawberry Picking with a Story

One of the distinctive elements of this event is its narrative approach. Guests are guided through the experience by a character known as the “Strawberry Hunter”, portrayed by professional actors. The tour-style experience includes interactions with original characters such as the “Gatekeeper of Oz”, a large puppet, and Dorothy, who appears via voice interaction. These elements add a sense of adventure and make the experience especially appealing to families and first-time visitors.

An Interactive Strawberry Dessert Experience

For the first time in the series, the event introduces an interactive dessert called “Freshly Picked Strawberries and Rainbow Cake”. Using strawberries harvested at the garden, this dessert features a rich vanilla-flavoured bavarois layered with strawberry jam and jelly, wrapped in a soft sponge cake inspired by clouds. Guests can decorate their cake themselves using freshly picked strawberries and colorful rainbow meringues, creating a personalized sweet treat.

On weekdays, visitors can also enjoy a rose-shaped strawberry macaron made with strawberries grown at Keisei Rose Garden. This special dessert is available as part of weekday-only plans.

Carefully Selected Strawberry Varieties

The strawberries featured in the event, known as “Oz Strawberries”, are grown by rose cultivation professionals at Keisei Rose Garden. Four varieties are available this season: Berry Pop Suz, Koiminori, Yotsuboshi, Benihoppe. Each variety is selected for its balance of sweetness, acidity, and flavour, offering visitors the chance to taste and compare different types.

“Strawberry Hunt in the Land of Oz” takes place at the back area of Keisei Rose Garden and runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the event period. The experience includes a guided strawberry picking session, a limited amount of strawberries to harvest, and complimentary same-day admission to the rose garden.

Keisei Rose Garden also emphasizes sustainability in its farming practices. Instead of using imported bumblebees for pollination, the garden uses hoverflies, which are well-suited to greenhouse environments and reduce environmental impact. This approach helps produce high-quality strawberries while minimising ecological strain.

The event is held every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, rain or shine.
