Takashi Yanase Exhibition: Life Is a Game of Joy

The first large-scale traveling exhibition dedicated to Takashi Yanase (1919–2013), the creator of Anpanman, offers a rare and comprehensive look at one of Japan’s most beloved and multifaceted creators. Yanase was far more than the originator of a children’s hero: he was an extraordinary entertainer whose work spanned manga, poetry, picture books, illustration, design, and editing.

This exhibition marks the 30th anniversary in 2026 of the Yanase Takashi Memorial Anpanman Museum and brings together approximately 200 original artworks. Through a series of carefully curated sections — Takashi Yanase in Depth, Manga, Poetry, Picture Books / Yanase Fairy Tales, and Anpanman — the exhibition traces the life, ideas, and creative evolution of an artist who dedicated his life to bringing joy to others.

Takashi Yanase in Depth

This section presents an overview of Takashi Yanase’s 94-year life and career. Through a chronological timeline, early works, and archival materials, it examines his activities as a manga artist, poet, picture book author, illustrator, designer, and editor, and traces the development of his creative ideas.

Manga — Connections Between People

Yanase aspired to become a manga artist from childhood. After working at the Kochi Shimbun newspaper, he moved to Tokyo and became an independent manga artist in 1953, producing advertising manga and newspaper serials. His breakthrough came in 1967, when his panel comic “Boohshi” won the Weekly Asahi Manga Award. This section displays panel comics in various styles and original drawings from Boohshi, including examples of his wordless “pantomime manga.”

Poetry — Born Like a Song

Yanase wrote the lyrics to “Te no Hira o Taiyō ni” in 1961 and self-published his first poetry collection, Songs of a Child’s Heart, in 1963. In 1973, he founded the magazine “Poetry and Fairy Tales” and served as editor-in-chief for 30 years. This section features original cover illustrations and handwritten poems from the magazine.

Picture Books and Yanase Fairy Tales

In addition to manga, Yanase created numerous picture books, which he referred to as “Yanase Fairy Tales”. This section presents original illustrations from works such as “The Gentle Lion”, “Chirin’s Bell”, and “The White Horse”, highlighting recurring themes found in his storytelling.

The Birth of Anpanman

In 1973, Yanase published the picture book “Anpanman”, introducing a hero who helps others by giving them food made from his own body. The character gained widespread popularity following the 1988 television anime adaptation. This section traces Anpanman’s development through original illustrations, explanatory works by Yanase, and canvas paintings of key scenes.

Epilogue — Life Is a Joy-Bringing Game

This section focuses on Yanase’s later years and his philosophy of bringing joy to others. It includes materials related to his activities as a performer in his eighties, along with works and items from his final period.

Nagoya Venue Exclusive — Special Takashi Yanase Video

A previously unreleased interview with Takashi Yanase, recorded for the Chukyo TV program “Shiawase no Kiiroi Koinu” and hosted by Keiko Toda – a Japanese actress, singer, who voices the Anpanman character – is presented exclusively at the Nagoya venue.
