World Cosplay Summit

Every year, Nagoya fills up with people dressed as characters from anime, manga and games - several thousand of them, from something like forty countries. The World Cosplay Summit began in the city in 2003 and has run annually since, growing from a small gathering into the closest thing the hobby has to a world championship.

It is not a fan convention that happens to be international. The summit was set up to use Japanese popular culture as a means of exchange between countries, and it is organised by a committee that includes the city of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, a local broadcaster and Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Representatives arrive as national teams, having won qualifying rounds at home.

How the Championship Works

Each country or region sends a pair. They must have made their costumes themselves, and they perform for two and a half minutes on stage - a short scene, usually with music, lighting and video behind them.

Two things are judged: the costumes, examined closely and at length by people who know how they were made, and the performance itself. Both carry serious weight, which is why teams spend the best part of a year preparing. The winning pair takes the title of Grand Champion.

The championship is the centrepiece, but it sits inside several days of events across the city.

An opening ceremony is held the evening before things properly begin, at Oasis 21 in the middle of Nagoya, where the national teams walk a red carpet.

The Osu Cosplay Parade is the part anyone can join. Around a thousand cosplayers gather at Osu Kannon, the temple at the heart of the old shopping district, and walk from there through the covered arcades while crowds line the route. It is the summit at its least formal and its most enjoyable.

Beyond the scheduled events, the city gives itself over to photography. Oasis 21, with its illuminated water feature, becomes a favourite spot after dark, and cosplayers work into the night with the Nagoya skyline behind them.

The 2026 summit ran from 31 July to 2 August, and the Grand Champion title went to the pair representing Hong Kong, performing as characters from Monster Hunter - one as a Palico, the other in hand-built hunter's armour.

The costumes had taken a year. The Palico was rebuilt three times before its texture looked right, the maker studying her own cat to get there and carrying one of its whiskers in a pocket during the performance. The armour was finished by hand throughout, with the colouring painted under ultraviolet light.

The singer and broadcaster Nakagawa Shoko sat as a special judge, returning to the summit for the first time in nineteen years. She said the standard had risen so far since her last visit that the characters seemed to be genuinely alive on the stage.

Tickets are sold by day, with the opening evening priced separately from the main weekend. There are two kinds: one for those attending in costume, and one for photographers and general visitors. Both include a participation pass.
