Shibuya Crossing

This intersection, often referred to as the world's busiest pedestrian crossing, sees a steady flow of foot traffic 24/7 with little decrease at midnight or in the early morning. Despite heavy foot traffic, road traffic jams are uncommon, even during rush hour. According to the 2016 Shibuya Center Street, as many as 3,000 pedestrians cross the intersection per green light (every 2 minutes). A 2014 survey by the Shibuya Redevelopment Association estimated a daily average of 260,000 pedestrians on weekdays and 390,000 on weekends, with some estimates suggesting as many as 500,000 people on the busiest days. The 2012 SOTO Outdoor Media Survey estimated 1.5 million pedestrians per week.

The crossing was established in 1973 and was featured in the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony to promote the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In recent years, it has become a popular gathering spot for young people on Halloween, with some dressing up in cosplay costumes. However, the increasing size and chaos of these crowds led to Shibuya Ward passing an ordinance in 2019 prohibiting alcohol consumption in the area at the end of October.
